Interaction between guided light beams was achieved with LiNbO3 electrooptic modulators, which operated by changing the cut-off condition of the lowest order guided mode in a channel waveguide, and CdS photodetectors. The photodetectors converted one of the input light signals into an electrical current. This current then changed the voltage bias on the electrooptic modulator, thereby changing the transmission state of a second input light signal, and the output of the logic gate. To demonstrate the flexibility of this approach to integrated optical logic, several elementary logic gates were combined on a single LiNbO3 substrate to produce a more complex information processing circuit, that of a half adder.
